Sci-Fi Starlet Saturday: Mary Elizabeth Winstead

It’s Sci-Fi Starlet Saturday again, and today we’re looking at Mary Elizabeth Winstead. At just 22 years old, Mary Elizabeth Winstead already has an impressive list of sci-fi and horror credits to her name.
Although she’s stunningly gorgeous, Mary Elizabeth differs from many of our other Saturday Sci-Fi Starlets in that she didn’t get her start as a fashion model. Her childhood ambition to become a ballerina quickly gave way to her love of theater when she began taking acting lessons at age 11.
She began taking television roles in 1997, and by 1999, Mary Elizabeth Winstead had a stint on the supernatural soap opera Passions. Shortly after that, she landed the lead in the short lived werewolf series Wolf Lake. Also of note to science fiction fans, Mary Elizabeth had a guest role on Tru Calling and a part in the made-for-MTV Carmen Electra vehicle, Monster Island.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s big screen credits include the horror flick The Ring Two, the superhero action film Sky High, and the lead in Final Destination 3. Other horror credits include Black Christmas and the Death Proof segment of Grindhouse.
Mary Elizabeth has also gained notice outside of her work in horror and science fiction films. She landed a part in the Emilio Estevez drama Bobby, and more recently, she played Lucy McClane in Live Free or Die Hard.

Although Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been vocal about not wanting to accept roles that require nudity at this point in her career, that hasn’t stopped men’s magazines from noticing how hot she is. In additon to appearing in Maxim and FHM photo shoots, she ranked 92 on Maxim’s 2007 Hot list and number 10 on the Maxim list of “Hottest Women of Horror Movies.” More recently, Mary Elizabeth came in at number 91 in the 2008 edition of the AskMen.com Top 99 Women.

Shelly Martinez: Scream Queen
We’re getting used to seeing Shelly Martinez as Salinas on TNA iMPACT! but she’s got another gig that’s more reminiscent of the Ariel shtick from her ECW days. Meet Shelly Martinez, vampire vixen (again):

Look familiar? This time Shelly’s sporting the bloodthirsty vamp look for a new horror-themed Web show called The Scream. “The show opens every week with a ‘Scream Babe’ original horror short featuring a hot babe with blood and gore,” according to the show’s Web site.
“The Scream” is hosted by actress Melissa Bacelar and includes interview segments with horror writer Heidi Martinuzzi of Pretty/Scary. The promo material says the show combines the four Bs: blood, boobs, babes and bodies. One of the upcoming guests is Christa Campbell, who we profiled in our Sci-Fi Starlet Saturday feature in August 2007.

Shelly Martinez bares her fangs in the trailer for “The Scream,” so presumably she appears in at least one episode. No word yet on whether she’ll be vamping it up as a regular on the show. Check out the trailer:

False Rumors About Lita’s Hospitalization

To paraphrase Mark Twain, rumors of Lita’s illness have been greatly exaggerated.
This weekend, reports emerged that ECW alum Amy Dumas, best known as WWE diva Lita, had missed a Pittsburgh show with her band, The Luchagors, after being admitted to the hospital. Later reports cited laryngitis as the reason for her hospitalization.
Now for the big shocker: the wrestling news Web sites got it wrong! Take a moment to digest my sarcasm there.
Anyway, turns out Amy Dumas missed that show with The Luchagors because she simply lost her voice. Here’s the real scoop, straight from Amy via a Luchagors MySpace bulletin:
Whoa!, What a way to wake up! I got tons of calls and texts this morning hoping I got out of the hospital soon. What? I’m not in the hospital! I lost my voice. That’s it. Our booking agent called the club to cancel the Imperial,PA show because I couldn’t talk over a whisper, but that’s it. No fever. No laryngitis. I don’t know where anything else came from. We have a day off today so I am going to continue to rest up and get ready to rock out in West Virginia tomorrow. I am on everything holistic and over the counter you can think of, so I am hoping to be at least 80% by tomorrow. I appreciate everyone writing in to check up on me, and as far as all the phone calls- I will return those when I get my voice back. It’s pretty annoying not being able to talk, by the way. I am going crazy!!! All that aside, we are all still having a great time on tour. We all had a blast with the guys from Ashers in New Hampshire and Mass, but I’m going to go ahead and say it was those bastards that got me sick!!! ha, ha- See you guys somewhere out on the road real soon!!
The Luchagors have a bunch of shows coming up this month, starting with a performance at the Monkey Bar in Huntington, West Virginia tomorrow. Keep an eye on their MySpace profile for updates on tour dates.

Sci-Fi Starlet Saturday: China Chow

Frankenfish is the greatest giant mutant fish movie ever made, partly due to the presence of Sci-Fi eye candy China Chow. This hottie may have moved on from Sci-Fi originals, but she’ll forever remain in our hearts as the fish fighting heroine of the the Sci-Fi Channels late night classic.

She doesn’t have the web presence you’d expect from an up and coming starlet but luckily for us the ‘net abounds with photos of the former model. Here’s hoping she gets more exposure in 2008, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a Frankenfish II!

Old School Thursday: The ECW Faithful Meet Big Show and Batista
The new ECW is a sore disappointment to the ECW faithful, fans who live and breath hardcore. Back when The Big Show was champion he and opponent Batista learned just how sorely disappointed fans were when what was supposed to be an exciting match was booed by the audience so robustly the wrestlers began to get distracted.
Only the appearance of Sabu, chair in hand, at the end the match causes the fans to cheer. Otherwise it was more than eleven minutes of painful humiliation.
Highlights: The crowd chants “You Both Suck!” at around 4:20. Then at 5:15 “Same Old Shit” starts. At around 6:20 they begin the infamous “Change the Channel” chant but for my money the best moment is around 9:28 where one of the faithful holds up a sign with the simple message “RIOT” on it.
